A market research done on various social media giants like Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat has shown that younger individuals are starting to transfer from word-focused social media platforms like Facebook to more image-focused platforms like Instagram and Snapchat.

Data on Facebook usage showed a decline of 3.4% on users between the ages of 12 and 17 this year. The same study has found that most of these users are transferring to Instagram, a Facebook owned image-centered social media platform.

“We see teens and tweens migrating to Snapchat and Instagram. Both platforms have found success with this demographic since they are more aligned with how they communicate – using visual content,” said Oscar Orozco, an eMarketer forecasting analyst, in a statement.

This is eMarketer’s first time forecasting a decline if Facebook usage in any age group. EMarketer is an online website dedicated to gathering data on various online markets. The same company saw a decline in Facebook’s under 12 years old and 18 to 24 years old age groups.

“At the same time, we now have ‘Facebook-nevers’ — children aging into the tween demographic who appear to be overlooking Facebook altogether, yet still engaging with Facebook-owned Instagram,” Orozco wrote.

Nevertheless, Snapchat still lags behind social media giants Instagram and Facebook. Snapchat currently has 79.2 million monthly active users compared to Instagram’s 85.5 million and Facebook’s 172.9 million.

Instagram can expect a massive growth of 23.8% across all ages this year. And a 19% increase on their below 12 demographic.

The predictions are all based on surveys, traffic, and ad targeting data. The numbers given are merely predictions and are not claimed to be certain to occur.

Over the recent years, Instagram has become one of the most beloved platforms of individuals and businesses alike. Due to its massive and still growing user base, companies are now starting to invest more and more in advertising on the said platform.

Some of the biggest businesses that recently opened their Instagram accounts include companies like Apple, Porsche, Heinz and more.
