‘Pandemic Pal’ Helps High-Risk Disabled and Seniors Find Masks, Safety Supplies

Seeking sanitizer? Missing a mask? Gotta get gloves? A new website, Pandemic Pal, is helping people who are at high risk during the COVID-19 pandemic find the safety supplies they need.

Pandemic Pal is a resource hub designed by and for people with disabilities and chronic illnesses, as well as their caregivers and other essential workers. The website searches major online stores for personal protective equipment such as masks, gloves, and cleaning products, so people at high risk can quickly find the supplies they need. Shoppers can find the best deals on scarce items like N95 masks, hand sanitizer, and disinfectant wipes without having to visit dozens of websites.

Founder Karin Willison, who uses a wheelchair due to cerebral palsy, was inspired to create Pandemic Pal after suddenly finding she could no longer order certain medical supplies online. “Well-intentioned companies think by setting aside medical supplies for hospitals, they’ll reach everyone who needs them, but unfortunately that’s not the case,” Willison explains. “Home health workers who assist people in their homes receive low wages through Medicaid, and most don’t work for hospitals or agencies. Many are family caregivers — parents, siblings and friends caring for loved ones with chronic medical conditions. But critical supplies have become hard to find, putting these communities even more at risk of COVID-19. So I decided to do something about it.”

In addition to listing places to buy coronavirus safety supplies, Pandemic Pal features a growing list of informational articles, including a guide to clear face masks for communicating with deaf people and tips for washing your hands when you have limited mobility. While the site was created for the disability and chronic illness community, it can be used by anyone, and welcomes essential workers such as delivery drivers, store cashiers, and janitors. “We believe everyone should have access to the medical supplies they need to stay safe from the coronavirus,” Willison says.
