Chinese Scholar Releasing Business Compass, a Brand-New Management Theory in Cambridge University

Enterprise (“企”) is written as “human” (“人”) up and “termination” (“止”) down in Chinese. That means an enterprise is made up of human without which it will be terminated. To manage an enterprise well, all business activities must take human as the core.

Recently, Chinese scholar Wang Ruping released Business Compass and held a seminar for it in Homerton College, Cambridge University. The masterpiece is updated from C-model Management published 10 years ago. Scholars and researchers took part in the seminar from countries and regions like China, America, Britain, Portugal, India, Singapore, Taiwan and Hong Kong, etc. Dr. Wang also told his innermost thoughts and feelings in writing the book during the seminar.

Thanks to the solid theoretical basis from early university experience, Dr. Wang had the chances to be managers in some large enterprises like Siemens, TCL, and LianTronics. In his career, he never gave up exploration and reflection for management theories. Finally, he has developed an analytical method named Business Compass (also BC model) and accomplished the masterpiece. In the identity transformation from manager to scholar, Dr. Wang profoundly realized the importance to innovate the business model, and the urgency to provide a brand-new management theory.

Based on the reflecting effect of history, Business Compass integrates the traditional Chinese wisdom to the western management quintessence, and puts forward the concepts of the “management of popularity”, “management of humanity”, and “balance of favorability”. Through interpretation of the five dimensions of “trend, law, measure, implement and interest”, the book systematically and thoroughly establishes the “five elements” in corporate business activities. Featured by “invariation, variation and simplicity”, the five dimensions coexist, co-ordinate and inter-restrain, reflecting both the balance of corporate business and the imbalance of corporate growth. It demonstrates a different business way, profound maybe, but easy actually.

Business Compass intends to seek the “variability and invariability” of the rules from business activities. As we all know, management is both science and art. The science can be copied while the art can be varied. In specific handling degree, management results may differ a lot. Business Compass digests both traditional Chinese philosophy and modern management science, innovates corporate management tools, and further integrates them into a simple BC model, which provides new theoretical guide frame and diagnostic tools for the development of business under the new historical background.

Dr. Wang mentioned, “Business Compass is applicable for both Chinese and foreign enterprises. In fact, the book demonstrates the golden principle of achieving shared growth through discussion and collaboration advocated by the “Belt and Road” initiative.

In the seminar, the participants agreed that Business Compass has the significance of enlightenment for both new economic organization model and business management theory study. Prof. Wang Dashu from Beijing University said, “We finally see a Chinese scholar standing in the academic palace of Cambridge with his new management theory architecture, not fully systematical maybe, but indicating a dawn of Chinese academic society inevitably.” Prof. Stewart, the director of international education of Homerton College, claimed that the seminar is the first to discuss and release the innovative academic achievement integrating traditional Chinese philosophy and western management science in the history of Cambridge. Dr. Wang is also the first Chinese discussing Chinese academic achievement and releasing his new works in Homerton College, Cambridge University.

Dr. Wang said, “I can fully feel their surprise in their unbelievable sights. In their ideas, how can a Chinese create such a business philosophy concerning the “management of popularity” based on the idea of “being people-oriented”? But they ignored such idea has being prevailed and influenced numerous Chinese scholars and corporate managers in the history.” Business Compass makes the world understand China, her enterprises and eventually her culture.
